Picasso, Painting Against Time

During his later years Picasso began to churn out work faster than ever, clearly aware of his own mortality. 'Picasso – Painting Against Time' at the Albertina brings together over 200 works from the last 12 years of the greater painter's life as he raced against time. In 1961 at the age of 80, Picasso moved to the French Riviera so that he could devote himself to his work during his final years. His sense of his impending death compelled him to draw up a rigid work schedule. Every piece of artwork, whether large-format painting, drawing, etching or sculpture, was allocated exactly the same amount of time each day, which means that his final work is extremely diverse. Despite the volume of work and the speed with which he produced it, his drawings and prints still show precise detail and sharp contours.
